- Go to Facebook.com or the app, tap Create new account, and enter your name, email or phone, password, birthday, and gender.
- Confirm the code Facebook sends to your email or phone to activate the account.
- It’s free, and you must be at least 13 years old.
Creating a Facebook account takes about two minutes. This guide covers signing up on the web and in the app, confirming your account, and the first security steps to set so you don’t get locked out later.

Create an account on the web
- Go to Facebook.com and click Create new account.
- Enter your first and last name.
- Enter a mobile number or email address — either works.
- Create a password, then set your date of birth and gender.
- Click Sign Up.
Create an account in the app
- Download the Facebook app and open it.
- Tap Create new account and tap Next through each step.
- Enter your name, birthday, gender, and a mobile number or email.
- Create a password and tap Sign Up.
Confirm your account
Facebook sends a confirmation code to the email or phone number you entered. Type that code into the confirmation box to activate your account. Until you confirm, some features stay locked.
Secure your new account right away
A brand-new account is a common target, so set these before anything else:
- Use a strong, unique password you don’t reuse on other sites.
- Turn on two-factor authentication (Settings & Privacy → Settings → Password and security).
- Add a backup email or phone so you can recover the account if you’re ever locked out.
- Never share your password or confirmation codes — no legitimate “Facebook support” will ask for them.
If you do get locked out down the line, our account recovery guide walks you back in.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Facebook account free?
Yes. Creating and using a Facebook account costs nothing, and no payment details are required to sign up.
Can I sign up without a phone number?
Yes. An email address works just as well as a phone number at sign-up. You can add a phone later for extra recovery options.
What’s the minimum age?
You must be at least 13 years old to create a Facebook account.
Can I have more than one account?
Facebook’s rules allow one personal account per person. For a business or brand, create a Page from your personal account instead of a second profile.
