How to Sync Phone Contacts to Facebook

May 6, 2026 by staff

What to Know

  • Facebook can continuously upload your phone’s contacts to power “People You May Know” and friend suggestions.
  • Turn it on (or off) in the app: Settings → search Upload contacts → toggle Continuous Contacts Upload.
  • If privacy matters, turn uploading off first, then delete already-uploaded contacts — otherwise they get re-uploaded on the next sync.

Syncing your phone contacts to Facebook helps it suggest people you know — but it also hands Facebook the names, numbers, and emails in your address book. This guide shows how to turn syncing on if you want it, and how to switch it off and wipe uploaded contacts if you don’t.

Sync or stop syncing phone contacts to Facebook, and delete uploaded contacts

What contact syncing actually does

When contact uploading is on, Facebook imports the names, phone numbers, and email addresses from your phone. It uses them for friend suggestions, “People You May Know,” and account recovery. It’s convenient, but it also means details about people who aren’t on Facebook end up on Facebook’s servers.

How to turn on contact syncing

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap the menu (three lines).
  2. Tap Settings & Privacy → Settings.
  3. Use the search bar at the top and type Upload contacts.
  4. Tap Continuous Contacts Upload and switch it on.

How to turn off contact syncing

  1. In the Facebook app, go to Settings and search Upload contacts again.
  2. Toggle Continuous Contacts Upload off.
  3. In Messenger, syncing is separate: tap your profile picture → Phone contacts (or Upload contacts) → turn the toggle off.
Order matters. Turn uploading off before deleting your uploaded contacts. If you delete first while syncing is still on, Facebook simply re-uploads everything the next time the app runs.

How to delete contacts already uploaded

  1. In a web browser, open the Manage invites and imported contacts page.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click Remove all contacts.
  3. For Messenger, open its separate Manage your uploaded contacts page and click Delete all contacts.

Frequently asked questions

Does syncing contacts help me find friends?

Yes — it’s what powers many friend suggestions. If that’s the only reason you turned it on, you can leave it off and still search for people manually or through friend requests.

Will my contacts know I uploaded them?

No, Facebook doesn’t notify them. But their details may be used to suggest them to you and, in some cases, to suggest you to them.

I see duplicate contacts on my phone after syncing — how do I fix it?

Open your phone’s Contacts app, tap and hold a duplicated Facebook-synced contact, and delete it there. Turning off syncing prevents new duplicates.
