How to Find Archived Messages on Messenger

May 6, 2026 by staff

What to Know

  • Fastest way: open Messenger, tap Search, and type the person’s name — archived chats show up in search.
  • To see the full list: Messenger menu → Archive on the app, or Archived chats on the web.
  • Archiving only hides a chat. Sending a new message brings it straight back to your inbox.

Archived a Messenger chat and now can’t find it? Archiving hides a conversation without deleting it, so everything is still there. Here’s how to find archived chats, bring them back, and how archiving differs from deleting.

Find archived messages on Messenger: search a name or open the Archived chats list

Find archived chats in the Messenger app

  1. Open Messenger (or the Messages area of the Facebook app).
  2. Tap the menu (three lines) or your profile picture, then tap Archive.
  3. Your archived conversations are listed there. Tap one to open it.

Even quicker: tap Search at the top, type the person’s name, and tap the result — archived chats appear in search even though they’re hidden from the main inbox.

Find archived chats on desktop

  1. Go to Messenger.com or open Chat on Facebook.
  2. Click the three-dot menu near your chats and choose Archived chats.
  3. Click any conversation to read it, or use the search bar to jump to a specific one.

How to archive and unarchive a chat

To archive: on the app, press and hold (or swipe) a conversation and tap Archive. On desktop, hover over the chat, click Options, then Archive chat.

To unarchive: open the archived chat and send a new message — it returns to your inbox automatically. On desktop you can also hover over it in Archived chats, click Options, then Unarchive chat.

Archived is not deleted. An archived chat is simply tucked out of sight and comes back the moment there’s new activity. A deleted chat is removed from your account and can’t be undone — so archive when you want a tidy inbox, delete only when you’re sure.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between archiving and deleting?

Archiving hides a chat but keeps every message; it reappears if you or the other person sends something new. Deleting permanently removes your copy of the conversation, with no way to restore it.

Does the other person know I archived our chat?

No. Archiving happens only on your side and is completely private. The other person sees nothing.

My archived chat isn’t showing up — where is it?

Try searching the person’s exact name. If it still doesn’t appear, the conversation may have been deleted rather than archived, and deleted chats can’t be recovered.

Verified against Messenger on the app and web as of July 2026.
