How to Manage Facebook Notification Settings

May 6, 2026 by staff

What to Know

  • Open Settings & Privacy → Settings → Notifications to control everything in one place.
  • Each notification type has separate Push, Email, and SMS toggles — turn off the channel, not just the alert.
  • You can’t disable every notification, but you can silence almost all of them, or use Quiet Mode to mute pushes on a schedule.

Facebook notifications pile up fast — likes, comments, birthdays, group activity, “people you may know.” Here’s how to take control of what reaches you and where, on both desktop and the app.

Manage Facebook notification settings: choose push, email, or SMS per notification type

Open your notification settings

On desktop

  1. Click your profile picture (top-right), then Settings & Privacy → Settings.
  2. Click Notifications in the left sidebar.

In the mobile app

  1. Tap the menu (three lines), then Settings & Privacy → Settings.
  2. Under Preferences, tap Notifications.

Choose what you’re notified about

The Notifications screen lists activity types — Comments, Tags, Reminders, Friend requests, Groups, Marketplace, and more. Tap any type to fine-tune it.

  1. Tap the notification type you want to change.
  2. Use the toggles to set how you’re alerted: Push (phone/browser banners), Email, or SMS.
  3. Turn off a whole channel — for example, switch Email off for a type you don’t care about while keeping Push on.
The channel matters more than the type. If your inbox is the problem, turn off Email notifications across the board. If your phone won’t stop buzzing, target Push. You rarely need to touch every individual category.

Mute everything temporarily with Quiet Mode

To silence all push notifications for a set period, open Settings & Privacy → Settings → Your Time on Facebook → Quiet mode. Schedule it for work hours or sleep, and Facebook mutes pushes automatically.

Still getting notifications after turning them off?

If you switched everything off in the app but alerts keep coming, the block is at your phone’s level:

  • iPhone: Settings → Notifications → Facebook → turn off Allow Notifications.
  • Android: Settings → Apps → Facebook → Notifications → turn them off.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn off Facebook notifications completely?

Not 100%. Facebook keeps a few essential alerts (like security warnings), but you can switch off Push, Email, and SMS for nearly everything else, and block the rest at your phone’s settings.

Why am I not getting notifications I want?

Check that the channel is on in both Facebook and your phone’s system settings. A type toggled on in Facebook still won’t buzz if the app is blocked at the OS level.
